It was built out in the 1910s through the 1930s with bungalows, two-families, and small colonials for families who worked the port and the mills, on stone and block foundations with basements, on flat land that sits only a few feet above the river.

The 1938 hurricane and Hurricane Carol on August 31, 1954, pushed the bay up Allens Avenue and into the streets behind it, and Fields Point at the neighborhood's edge is where the city's storm surge comes ashore. The combined sewers under Washington Park back up through basement floor drains in a heavy rain, and groundwater comes through stone walls every spring. The February 2023 cold snap split pipes in enclosed porches across the neighborhood.
