Silver Lake is the neighborhood in the far west of Providence along Plainfield Street and Pocasset Avenue, where the Pocasset River forms the line with Cranston and Johnston. The lake it was named for was filled in a century ago. It was an Italian neighborhood from the 1900s on, and the houses are 1900s through 1920s two-families and triple-deckers on the flat streets near the river and bungalows and capes on the slopes of Neutaconkanut Hill, the 88-acre wooded hill that is the highest point in the city.
The Pocasset is the flood risk. On March 30 and 31, 2010, it went over its banks and flooded the low streets on both sides of the Cranston line. The rest of the year the problems are an old neighborhood's: groundwater through stone cellar walls, galvanized supply lines rusting through, a third-floor leak coming through two ceilings, and combined sewers backing up through floor drains. The February 2023 arctic blast split pipes in unheated rear stairwells and porches here as everywhere.
