Olneyville is the mill neighborhood on the Woonasquatucket River west of downtown Providence, built around Olneyville Square and the mills that lined the river from the 1860s on. The triple-deckers and two-families on the side streets went up between 1880 and 1920 for the mill workers, on stone foundations with deep, damp cellars, and the mills themselves have become apartments and studios. Route 6 and Route 10 cut through the neighborhood along the river's floodplain.
The river is the story. On March 30 and 31, 2010, the Woonasquatucket rose over its banks after more than eight inches of rain in two days and flooded Valley Street, the mill buildings along the river, and the low streets of Olneyville. Most losses the rest of the year are smaller: groundwater in a stone cellar every spring, combined sewers backing up through floor drains, a third-floor bath leaking through two ceilings, and pipes splitting in unheated stairwells when the temperature hits minus 9, as it did in February 2023.
